Have you just selected a new apartment to move into? Or maybe you’re moving out on your own for the first time? This is an exciting time! The next thing on your to-do list is to find things to help furnish your apartment. You may have one big criterion: do not break the bank on furnishings. Not to worry, we’ve compiled a list of a few resources and things you can do to ensure that you do not break the bank on furnishing your new apartment home.
Thrift Stores
Thrift stores are full of great items that would surprise you. Shopping for items at these stores allows you to take something that someone cherished and give it a new home. Keep in mind that you are taking something that was once used and repurposing the item and giving it a new life. This is an inexpensive way to get some furniture that is in decent shape. Even if the piece of furniture you are looking at doesn’t match your aesthetic or style, you can paint the item to match and even fix some small imperfections it may have. Upcycling is what most would call this process.
Ask Family Members
More often than not, your family members will have some furniture that they are planning to get rid of. If they do, offer to take it off their hands. This is an efficient way to save some cash while also furnishing your apartment. Your family may have items that are more expensive than what is planned out in your budget for furnishings and having those items can mean you will have furniture that last for a long while. An additional upside to getting furniture from family members is that they may be willing to let go of a full set of furniture so you may have the potential to have an entire set in your new living space!
Upcycle Existing Furniture
If you’ve bought furniture from thrift stores or gotten pieces from family members to help furnish your apartment, have you considered upcycling the items? Upcycling is the best way to give something a new life. Changing out the fabric on an upholstered item or just a simple repainting of the frame of a bookshelf can completely alter the atmosphere and look of the item. Maybe you like the look of an entertainment center but didn’t like the shelving; you could remove the shelving and add on some new coats of paint and the piece could look brand new! With this mindset, the possibilities are endless.
