Summer Family Fun in Murfreesboro

July 23, 2021

There is always something fun to do in Murfreesboro, no matter what season it is. We have gathered a list of top summer activities to do during the months when school is out and friends come to visit. Keep this family-friendly list handy to stave off boredom, or even make it a game by seeing how many activities you can do before the summer ends!

Explore a Native American Historical Site

Middle Tennessee is an area full of history and heritage. Old Stone Fort State Park is a wonderful place for the whole family to explore, and it surrounds a structure built by Native Americans between 1,500 to 2,000 years ago. This archeological site also includes a beautiful wooded hiking trail that leads through the site and alongside peaceful waterfalls.

Be a Pioneer for a Day

As you continue learning about American history in fun ways, be sure to visit the historic Cannonsburgh Pioneer Village. Children can step back in time to experience what life was like for early settlers in the Murfreesboro area, with exhibits and recreations spanning the 1830s to 1930s. Your family can tour a grist mill, one-room schoolhouse, general store, a blacksmith shop, a well, and more exciting historical reproductions.

Watch a Movie Under the Stars

For evenings when you simply want to get out of the house and see a good film, The Moonlite Drive-In is a perfect place to visit. Located in nearby Woodbury about 25 minutes from Murfreesboro, The Moonlite Drive-In is a retro-inspired theater playing family-friendly films. Bring your blanket, turn your car radio to the proper station, and enjoy your popcorn under the stars!

Picnic at Percy Priest Lake

On especially hot Summer days, few things are more fun than cooling off in the water. Pack a picnic and head to Percy Priest Lake, about a 45-minute drive north of Murfreesboro. The Anderson Road Recreation Area features a sandy beach along the lakefront, making it perfect for feeling like you’re at the beach without having to drive very far.

Shopping on the Square

Downtown Murfreesboro is full of charm, with many of its buildings still maintaining their original exteriors from the early 1900s. Shoppers can browse a variety of antiques, boutiques and new retail, gift shops, artisan galleries, restaurants, and more along the square.

Berry Picking at Batey Farms

Batey Farms has something for all ages – children can enjoy picking strawberries directly from the vine, while teens have access to a beautiful sunflower patch for gathering and photographing. Adults can even purchase farm-fresh meats including bratwursts, bacon, breakfast sausages, and more.

This list highlights just a few of the exciting activities available in Murfreesboro. If you are looking to relocate to the area, this family-friendly city is a perfect place to call home.
