6 Things to Pick Up at the Local Farmers’ Market

May 28, 2021

With the Summer season approaching, farmers’ markets are opening back up. Going to your local farmer’s market is a great way to give something back to your community and support local farmers and others that sell at the market. In the Middle Tennessee area there are several notable farmer’s markets you can go to. The Nashville Farmers Market is open year-round and is situated in a facility with a number of eateries featuring cuisine from all over the world. There are local markets in cities like Franklin and Nolensville as well. Closer to Smyrna, La Vergne and Murfreesboro is the Rutherford County Farmers’ Market, which is held Tuesdays and Fridays at the Lane Agri-Park. In downtown Murfreesboro, you can attend the Saturday market at the Square. Whichever farmers’ market you choose to attend, here are six things to pick up as you peruse the booths.

Local Produce

One of the main reasons people attend farmers’ markets is to get fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. From giant heirloom tomatoes to juicy peaches to fresh herbs, you can find a lot of the same produce you would find at the grocery store at the farmers’ market – only it’s local and much more fresh.

Local Honey

Aside from fruits and vegetables, another great local product to pick up at the farmers’ market is honey. Eating local honey is supposed to be beneficial for people who suffer from allergies – not to mention the delicious fresh taste! It’s a great feeling to be able to prepare a meal using locally grown, healthy ingredients.

Beef and Dairy

There will often be market booths selling beef and dairy products. While the meat may be more expensive than what you’d find at your local grocery, you have the advantage of getting information about the animals’ diet and how they are raised from the vendor. And if you’ve never had local, fresh dairy products like milk and cheese, you’re in for a treat. You may be able to pick up some farm fresh eggs as well, although you’ll probably need to arrive early to snag a carton since they tend to go fast at many markets.

Baked Goods

Who doesn’t love fresh baked bread? If you don’t bake yourself, the farmers’ market is a great place to pick up a fresh load of bread to use for the week’s toast, sandwiches, etc. In addition to bread, you should be able to find fresh pies of all kinds, cookies, and other delicious treats.

Flowers

From fresh bouquets to potted flowers and plants for your garden, your local farmers’ market may have just the thing you are looking for if you want to spruce up your landscaping or surprise Mom with some flowers.

Gifts

Farmers’ markets are not always limited to edible wares! At many markets, you can find gifts (for others or yourself!) such as jewelry, home decor, pet accessories, clothing and more. The opportunity to support local artisans and makers is another great thing about going to a farmers’ market!
